Questions & answers
The things people ask.
In roughly the order you'd ask them — who we are, how to book us, what happens at three in the morning, what an EICR actually involves, and how the money works.
Who you're dealing with
01Who is Newton Electrical Contractors?
A small family company of electrical contractors in Harrogate, working out of a unit at Birchwood Mews and serving Harrogate and district. Mark is the owner and director; Lisa runs the other half of it; Rob, Harry and Ed are the electricians whose names keep turning up in our reviews. We're rated 5.0 on Google.
How long have you been going?
Newton Electrical Contractors Ltd has been registered at Companies House since 4 February 2008, company number 06492772, and is still active. You can look the record up yourself — we'd rather you did that than take a number on a website at face value.
Are you actually a family firm, or is that just a line?
It's a line customers use about us first. “I can't recommend this family-run electrical company highly enough… Thank you Mark & Lisa!” is a review, not marketing copy.
Who will actually come to my house?
One of our own electricians — Mark, Rob, Harry or Ed — and we'll tell you who before the day. We don't pass jobs to whoever's free on a trade platform.
Booking, emergencies and hours
02What are your opening hours?
For quotes, bookings and paperwork, ring the office line on 01423 566669 during the working day. Our Google listing says “open 24 hours” — that's the emergency call-out line, not a staffed office through the night. If it's urgent out of hours, ring 07525 763337 and someone will pick up.
Do you really cover 24-hour emergencies?
Yes — 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Power off across the house, a board that's tripping and won't reset, burning smells, water where it shouldn't be: that's what the emergency line is for.
How quickly will you get to me?
We aim to attend within one hour of an emergency call. Before that we'll try to talk you through the fault on the phone — it's surprising how many are solved in five minutes with the board open and someone sensible on the other end, and it costs you nothing.
What should I do before you arrive?
Check whether your neighbours are off too — if the street's dark it's a network fault, not yours. Otherwise switch off and unplug anything that was running when it went, keep the board accessible, and don't keep resetting a device that keeps tripping. There's a fuller list on our emergency page.
How do I get a quote?
Ring 01423 566669 or email enquiries@electrician-harrogate.co.uk with roughly what you need and where you are. For anything more than a small job we'll come and look before quoting — quoting a rewire down the phone does nobody any favours.
Homes, landlords and certificates
03Do I need my fuse board replacing?
Not automatically. An older board isn't dangerous just for being old — what matters is whether the protection, earthing and bonding are right for the installation as it is now. An inspection tells you that. If it doesn't need doing, we'll tell you it doesn't.
What is an EICR and how long does one take?
An Electrical Installation Condition Report is a periodic inspection and test of the fixed wiring, circuit by circuit, written up with any defects coded by how serious they are. A typical house takes the best part of a day, and you'll need the power off in stages while we test.
Can you do a landlord certificate for a rented property?
Yes — that's an EICR on a rented property, and we do them for private landlords, estate agents and managing agents. Any remedial work gets quoted separately so you can see exactly what you're paying for rather than it being buried in one figure.
Can you rewire a house while we're still living in it?
Usually, yes. We work room by room or floor by floor and keep circuits live where we can, so you keep a kettle, a fridge and a light most of the time. We did a complete update of the electrics in a 1910 terrace this way.
Do you do smaller jobs — a socket, a light, a shower?
Yes. Extra sockets, outdoor sockets, downlights, wall lights, garden and security lighting, smoke alarms, electric shower swaps. We'd rather do the small job well and be the people you ring for the big one later.
Commercial work
04What sort of commercial customers do you work for?
Local councils, shops, offices, MOD sites, nursing and care homes, builders, facilities management companies, caravan parks — both residential and touring — landlords and estate agents.
Can you work at height in a sports hall or pool?
Yes. Our electricians are IPAF-qualified and we run our own certified access equipment reaching up to 12 metres, so high-level work in gyms, sports halls and swimming pools doesn't wait on a hired platform arriving.
Can you work outside our trading hours?
Yes — shops, offices and care settings usually need it that way, and we'd rather do it at 6am than shut your floor at lunchtime. Say so when you ring and we'll schedule around you.
Do you take on maintenance contracts?
We do. Planned maintenance arrangements suit landlords, managing agents and commercial sites — periodic testing scheduled before it lapses, remedials tracked, and one number to ring.
Money and paperwork
05How long is a quotation valid for?
Twenty-eight days from the date on it. That's in our terms and conditions, so the figure won't move while you think about it.
Do your prices include VAT?
Prices we quote are exclusive of VAT unless we've said otherwise. We'd rather be plain about that when we give you the number than have it appear later.
How does payment work on a larger job?
For sums over £4,000 we invoice in interim stages, with payment due within 14 days of each. You'll know the staging before the job starts.
Can I see your certification and insurance?
Ask and we'll send it across before you book. We work to NICEIC Approved Contractor and Part P standards — we just don't think a scheme number printed on a web page proves much, so we'd rather send you the current paperwork directly.
